There are loves that burn brighter than reason, and there are those that consume everything in their path. E.M. Wyborn knew such love - a passion so fierce, so all-encompassing, it led her to sacrifice everything for the promise of a dream.
Inspired by our Great (Great Great) Cousin,
a girl whose first love was so encompassing she would lose everything for the one she loved.
He loved her, he claimed, more than life itself, but he would never, could never,
ask her to leave her life in England to migrate to the untamed lands of the New Holland coast.
Refusing to let love die, she devised a plan to steal her mother’s jewels, & stow aboard the Scarborough,
declare her love & sacrifice all she knew for all they dreamed.
It was a cold winter’s morn when she was found aboard the ship.
She spent days & nights picturing their reunion. What it would be like to be in the arms of her love once more.
There was a problem, he was not on the ship. He was not on the registry.
He was a liar & a coward, & she was a 15-year-old stowaway at the mercy of a ship
full of sailors as dastardly as the convicts they transported.
She was ripped of all possessions & kept in the hull of the ship, as entertainment for the crew,
arriving 8 months later, pregnant, abandoned to a hell on earth of
‘weeping toil in flames of brimestone & boiling lakes of sulfur’.
This was her life. A prisoner of her infatuated love for an undeserving man.
Leaden Hearts Scarborough Stowaway Sea Aged Whiskey is our Origin Whiskey,
aged at sea for 8 months, matured in the hull of a ship in the
freezing waters of the Southern Ocean, as she was.
A whiskey for all who have loved with a passion that burned brighter than any flame,
& to all those who were burned by it, never to be the same again.
In honor of her, all she stood for, & all who share her lovelorn spirit,
this is for You.
There are loves that burn brighter than reason, and there are those that consume everything in their path. E.M. Wyborn knew such love—a passion so fierce, so all-encompassing, it led her to sacrifice everything for the promise of a dream.
Her heart belonged to a man who claimed to love her more than life itself. But he swore he could never ask her to leave her home in England to join him on the rugged shores of New Holland. His words stoked the fire within her—a fire that would not allow love to slip through her fingers.
At fifteen, with her mother’s jewels in hand and resolve in her heart, she devised a daring plan. She would stow away on The Scarborough, the convict ship bound for New Holland, and declare her love. Together, they would build the life they had dreamed of, far from the constraints of her old world.
For weeks, she hid in the shadows of the ship, enduring the cold, the fear, and the isolation, her mind alight with the vision of their reunion. But as the ship creaked toward the horizon, the truth came crashing down. Her name was not on the registry, nor was his. He was not aboard.
Her love was a lie. The man who had promised her everything had left her with nothing.
When she was discovered, she was dragged from her hiding place and stripped of all she carried—her jewels, her dignity, and her dreams. She was thrown into the hull of the ship, a stowaway at the mercy of a crew as brutal as the convicts they transported.
For eight long months, as the ship braved the freezing waters of the Southern Ocean, she endured horrors that cannot be spoken. By the time she reached New Holland’s shores, she was no longer a girl but a ghost of the woman she might have been—abandoned, pregnant, and condemned to a life of toil and suffering.
Her love, which had once burned so brightly, had left her charred, her innocence sacrificed to the flames. Yet even in her anguish, there was resilience, a spark that refused to die.
Today, her story lives on in Scarborough Stowaway Sea Aged Whiskey, our origin whiskey. Like her, it endures the punishing ocean voyage, maturing in the hull of a ship, shaped by the wildness of the sea. A whiskey for those who have loved too fiercely and lost too deeply, for those who are never the same again.
