“Remember, someone’s always watching. You can do anything you want, however wicked—just make sure no one’s looking when you do it.”
Susana Reynolds was a woman shaped by hardship and forged by defiance. After her husband’s death, she sought an honest living but found only cruelty at the hands of the law. Her life turned darker when she lost her right eye to a drunken police officer’s rage. Stripped of options, she became known as the Moll of Mulbring, forced into prostitution to survive.
But Susana’s spirit was never one to bow. In pain and driven to drink, she took to distilling her own gin—a brew as potent and unrelenting as the woman herself. From beneath the old family homestead, she stored liters of illegally distilled gin in stolen whiskey barrels, hidden alongside the ill-gotten goods of her brazen schemes. She entertained scoundrels and scallywags with equal parts charm and cunning, getting them drunk and stripping them of all they had—pockets emptied, hearts stolen, and pride left behind.
The police came often. Sometimes to interrogate, sometimes for favors, but they never left empty-handed. And yet, despite their frequent visits, they never found her hidden treasures beneath the floorboards. Susana’s cleverness kept her one step ahead, her wry grin always daring the world to catch her.
Her living relatives still tell the tale of old Granny Reynolds, sneaking under the trapdoor every night and returning with two glasses of her moonshine gin. One she would drink. The other, she would place her glass eye in, turning to the children with a sly smile and saying:
“Remember, someone’s always watching. You can do anything you want, however wicked—just make sure no one’s looking when you do it.”
She died as she lived, unapologetically herself—sitting in her chair above the trapdoor, her glass eye resting in a tumbler of gin, forever watching.
Leaden Hearts Rare Oak Barrel Aged Gin is inspired by her infamous life and indomitable spirit. Aged for three months in whiskey barrels on the same land where she lived and died, this gin is as bold, cheeky, and one of a kind as Susana herself.
This gin is a tribute to the rogues, the daring, and those who face life’s hardships with a grin and a raised glass.
