On May 29, 2020, the world stood at a grim milestone: nearly 6 million people infected, over 360,000 lives lost, and an invisible enemy continuing its relentless march. The pandemic was described as a war, but unlike wars of the past, this fight wasn’t with weapons or armies—it was fought with compassion, vigilance, and collective action.
In these times, we were reminded of a simple truth: we depend on each other. To care for ourselves is to care for others. To take precautions is to protect those we love, and even those we may never meet.
That’s why we created the Koolkuna Gin Scented Hand Sanitizer. In the local Indigenous language, Koolkuna means A Place of Safety. That is what we strive to offer, no matter where you are in the world. With every bottle, we aim to make a small difference, providing a layer of protection for the essential workers, the vulnerable, and the everyday heroes who stand on the frontlines of this fight.
Since April 2020, we’ve diverted our focus from spirits to sanitizer, donating the majority of our product to those most in need. From healthcare workers to grocery clerks, from families to communities, we’ve seen the extraordinary strength of humanity coming together, united in purpose.
This sanitizer is crafted from the heads and tails of our gin, with its signature botanicals lending a familiar scent to an unfamiliar challenge. It’s a reminder that even in the darkest of times, we can find light.
This is for the doctors, the nurses, the teachers, the public servants—for all of us who fought, who sacrificed, and who never gave up.
Leaden Hearts Koolkuna Gin Scented Hand Sanitizer was created as a COVID-19 pandemic relief initiative to assist those on the frontlines and in vulnerable communities.
By late May 2020, over 5.9 million confirmed cases and 360,000 deaths had reshaped the world. With supplies of basic protective tools dwindling, distilleries like ours turned to hand sanitizer production to meet the growing demand.
Crafted from the heads and tails of our gin, Koolkuna sanitizer follows the guidelines set by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the World Health Organization (WHO). From its inception on April 1, 2020, we set a goal to donate over 500 liters to those most in need. Healthcare workers, elderly individuals, carers, and families with ill relatives received the lion’s share of our product, ensuring protection where it was needed most.
The sanitizer, available as both a gel and liquid, is infused with the familiar botanicals of our signature gin, offering a subtle reminder of warmth and care during these challenging times. It’s more than a tool—it’s a promise of solidarity and hope.
As governments tentatively ease restrictions, we must remain vigilant. Using sanitizer, washing hands, practicing social distancing, and wearing masks are small acts with immeasurable impact. Together, these efforts will allow our healthcare systems to manage the crisis and give our communities the strength to endure.
