yirradhu

Not just a road, but a calling, a thread,
A whisper that pulls where the old paths have led.
Not just a bus, but a place to belong,
A shelter, a story, a home built strong.

The land remembers, the fire still burns,
The river still speaks, the sky always turns.
To come home is not just to stand on a shore,
But to feel in your bones—you are lost no more.

To Come Home.

Yirradhu isn’t just an old country school bus - it’s a journey, a promise, a way to move through the world with intention. Named from the Wiradjuri word meaning ‘to come home,’ she is more than transport, more than shelter - she is a space to return to, a place where the road and the sky and the earth meet in quiet conversation.
She has taken me across this vast country, through red dust and salt air, through winding mountain roads and desert plains, and now, she is ready for someone who hears the same call, who understands that home isn’t a place - it’s a way of moving through the world.

Some places call you back. Some places travel with you.
Yirradhu is both.

Yirradhu carries the weight of journeys past but moves with the heart of something free. She doesn’t belong to the neat squares of suburbia, the expectation of four walls and a foundation that never shifts. She belongs to the open road, to the hush of dawn over an empty desert, to the long pause of breath before a storm rolls in.

An old girl with a new heart, breathed new life in her with a new engine that hums low, steady, writing new songs in dust and long-forgotten highways of the great Australian outback. She has seen the old roads, the backroads, the roads that never made it to maps. She knows the scent of eucalyptus in the heat, the stillness of a firelit night, the sound of wind moving through high country.

Inside, she is not just built – she is made. Made for slow mornings with fresh coffee and the sun spilling through the windows, for nights when the record spins as flames flicker in the firepit outside. Made for the quiet weight of books read under soft light, for the taste of a drink poured slow from the bar. For the rooftop deck where time stretches open, for the garden where herbs grow in the same soil that carries the memory of all who walked here before.

She is not just a bus. She is a home that moves.
Traveling with Yirradhu is about slowing down, breathing deeply, & embracing the connections made along the way – with the land, with others, with spirit, & with ourselves. Each sunrise promises new beginnings, each road stretches toward possibility. This journey is about more than adventure; it’s about presence & connection. A complete mobile studio that allows me to work anywhere, every project I work on – whether that is photography or filmmaking, a project of Ngarra or the ITA Foundation – being on Country is essential. Yirradhu brings me there & brings me into relation, allowing me to sit with Elders, listen to the stories held in earth & rock, to travel lightly & meaningfully, & give back more than I receive.

Fully self-sufficient, built to roam, designed to stay as long as the moment allows. Solar-fed power, a water filtration system that turns anywhere into a place to drink, a shower beneath the open sky, a bed that holds you steady when the world outside shifts and spins.

And when the road leads nowhere, when the world feels too much, she is still there. A quiet place, a steady place, a place that waits.

Some people spend their lives searching for home. Some people build it and take it with them.

Together, we move not just through landscapes but through layers of story, memory, & connection, collecting fragments of something greater than ourselves.

With Yirradhu, coming home is less about a destination & more about finding your place in the rhythm of the land. Each mile, each stop, brings something alive - a piece of wisdom from an Elder, the song of a river, the quiet company of a star-filled sky.

There’s always space here – under starlit skies on the rooftop, around the fire’s warmth, or in those quiet corners where stories breathe and take root. When we’re gone, all that endures are the stories we leave behind, echoes of lives touched and moments shared. So, what will your story be? What trees will you plant for others to rest beneath? What strands of grass will you weave into a mat for future storytellers to sit upon?

Some builds are just about function – this one is about freedom. Every modification, every upgrade, every carefully chosen addition wasn’t just about making Yirradhu livable, it was about making her limitless.

She isn’t just a van, she’s a home that moves, a space that carries everything you need to go further, stay longer, and live with the land instead of just passing through it. From self-sustaining off-grid power to thoughtful design details that turn every stop into a moment worth staying for, Yirradhu has been built for the road and for the stillness in between.

Every inch of her has been made with purpose. A rooftop deck for stargazing and slow mornings, a bar stocked for nights when the fire burns low, a shower beneath open skies, and a power system that lets you charge, create, and live anywhere the road takes you.

This isn’t just a build. This is a way of life.
